SA Demerit Points for Speeding

Postby patrickleslie » 02 May 2013, 22:55 pm

Not modification law, but still an oddity. This came up the other day on a SA Police News facebook post, someone asked if it was 'double demerit points' on long weekends.

SAPOL replied no.

The truth is, it's pretty much double demerit points every day.

National Scheme Speeding
0-15 = 1 point
15-30 = 3 points
30+ = 4 points

SA Speeding
0-10 = 2 points
10-20 = 3 points
20-30 = 5 points
30+ = 7 points

I notice the demerit points have changed in the second document:
http://www.sa.gov.au/upload/franchise/Transport,%20travel%20and%20motoring/Drivers%20and%20licences/MR265.pdf

Please note that speeding offence penalities including demerit points changed on 1 September 2012. For information regarding speeding offences prior to this date please call 13 10 84

Whilst we don't condone speeding, we do believe any changes to law / fines which impact on vehicle operators should be consistent across states, made in good faith (statistical data and evidence to substantiate such an increase), and appropriate education strategy implemented by transport or police departments to educate drivers.

Changing from a 15 point range to a 10 point range has also gone against the norm.

On a positive, this is a very good guide to demerit points, handy for the glove box.

That's correct, one is an old doc, one is current. There were a number of changes on September 1 2012, this was part of the 'hoon laws'. Although in its structure it seems to target normal people more so than hoons. Of course, when it was enacted it was publicised as a 'break for motorists' but this is clearly not the case. Around the same time they quietly changed most of SA's country 110 zones to 100 zones...no surprises, it had an immediate revenue increase.
